Soaking WET

Soaking WET Sep. 22-26  is a series of choreographic evenings curated by David Parker, whose company, David Parker and The Bang Group has been the first and only resident-dance company of the West End Theatre since January 2003. Parker is committed to bringing together artists of varied backgrounds and levels of experience in order to break down aesthetic barriers and achieve mutual inspiration. The artists are united by their commitment to movement and their understanding that vigorous experimentation can take many forms. Soaking WET has received generous support from The Jerome Robbins Foundation and New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Soaking Wet Dance Series, curated by David Parker and produced by Jeff Kazin, opens its 2016-17 season with two programs of works by women choreographers.   (Soaking W (West)   (End) (Theatre).   Performances are Thursday through Sunday, September 22-25, with two performances daily, two different programs.

Program A, performed  Sept. 22, 23 & 24 at 7 PM and Sept. 25 at 2 PM, will feature works by choreographers Sara Hook, Rebecca Stenn, Cat Wagner, and Megan Williams;
Program B, performed Sept. 22, 23 & 24 at 8:30 PM & Sept. 25 at 4 PM, is a presentation of Women in Motion, and features works by Brynne Billingsley & Artists, remiharris/dancesbyremi and Kristin Swiat.

SARA HOOK presents the New York premiere of Is All, a solo created for and performed by Chicago-based artist Katie Williams, set to a spare and elegant score by composer Barry R. Morse.  The imaginative team of Hook and Williams began creating the work by asking non-dance folks to imitate the first thing that came to mind when thinking of “Modern Dance.”  They collected these images on video and thus the initial movement vocabulary of the work was born.  After numerous deconstructions and the intermingling of a few iconic dance history remnants added, the dance turns into an unapologetic (if perhaps part nostalgic) invocation of feminist poetic sensuality.

Sara Hook (choreographer) has danced with the companies of Pearl Lang, Jean Erdman, The Bang Group, and the Nikolais Dance Theater.  She is currently Professor of Dance at the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign.

Katie Williams (dancer) holds a BFA in Dance from the U of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, where she received the Donald Carducci Memorial Scholarship for excellence in dance performance.  Katie is currently an independent dance artist in Chicago.

will present Bridge-maker, which the choreographer will perform with Megan Williams.   Premiered last March at the BAM Fisher Theater, the duet finds the performers working to blend their distinct movement styles to create an otherworldly, personal duet.  Each dancer brings her own sense of physicality, reaction time, interaction, gesture and considered construction to the duet, danced to a music collage compiled by Stenn.

Rebecca Stenn, a founding member of Pilobolus Too, has presented her company, founded 20 years ago, at venues including The Copenhagen Festival, The Edinburgh Festival, Joyce Theater, The Annenberg Center, and Jacob’s Pillow.  Stenn is currently on the faculties of The New School and Princeton University, and is a choreographer-in-residence at Dartmouth College.
Megan Williams holds a BFA in Dance from the U of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, where she received the Donald Carducci Memorial Scholarship for excellence in dance performance.

premieres the first installation of her newest trio The Lady Kids, inspired by Grimm’s fairy tales and the wild woman archetype.  Performed to an original text by the choreographer and collaborators Louise Benkelman, Mei Maeda and Imogene Williams, the work intermingles a voracious contemporary dance vernacular with quirky, non sequitur moments and durational tasks.

Cat Wagner is a Brooklyn-based dance/theater artist.  She received her MFA in Choreography and Performance from Smith College, and has taught at Smith, Amherst, and Mount Holyoke Colleges.  As a dancer, Cat performed with Danny McCusker, Wanda Strukus, Joan Green and Double Edge Theatre in Massachusetts.   She currently teaches at public schools and private studios throughout NYC.

MEGAN WILLIAMS presents Play Like A Girl #2 (premiere), a quartet set to music by Eve Beglarian inspired by the Bulgarian Women’s Chorus standard Kaval Siri.   Dancers are Reka Echerer, Hannah Garner, Chelsea Hecht, Imani Simmons, and Emily Tarrier.

Megan Williams’ work has been produced by 10 Hairy Legs, Dancenow NYC at Joe’s Pub and NYLA, and by the Rivertown Artist’s Workshop, Barnspace, MIXT Co., Purchase College and Marymount Manhattan College.  Megan has a BFA from Juilliard and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College.  She taught at Purchase from 2000-13 and is currently on the faculties at the Gibney Dance Center and Connecticut College.

Thursday/Friday/Saturday at 8:30 PM and Sunday at 4 PM – A Presentation of WOMEN IN MOTION

BRYNNE BILLINGSLEY & ARTISTS presents the trio Felt Shift, a meditation on the internal architecture of thought, weaving unpredictable patterns and offering a possibility of endless images.   The trio was choreographed by Billingsley with performers Jenny Campbell, Amy Larson, and Kristen Rizzuto to music by Tim Hecker.

BRYNNE BILLINGSLEY & ARTISTS, a NYC-based contemporary dance company, creates movement landscapes that blend the visual appeal of an abstract painting with the visceral experience of a storm or a sunset.  BB&A is interested in portraying the inevitability of change and its effect on nature, relationships, and form.  On stage, on site, and in film, they create environmental works which invite audiences to experience dance as it mirrors the natural world.

presents I saw his body and forgot my own.   Dancers Marie Davis, Jillian Egan and Britni Lariviere will perform this examination of the inner and outer tweaks we make as women to appease others.  Sound design and media are by Wi-Moto Nyoka; music is the text “Grooming Essentials for Women (1956)” from the public domain video, courtesy of Prelinger Archives, and Mike Wall’s “43214 (Remix)”.  Costume design is by Evan Prizant.

Barbados native REMI HARRIS is a freelance dancer and choreographer based in Brooklyn NY.  Her goal is to create, perform, and explore art-based relationships, audience engagement and continue the practice of making accessible dance through concert, site-specific, and film works.

presents A Prayer for Disbelievers, a collaboration between playwright Rehan Ansari and the choreographer as they feel out the interstices between narrative and abstraction, the sacred and the profane.   The work will be performed by Swiat and Ansari.

KRISTIN SWIAT is a movement-based artist and bodyworker interested in the areas where art and healing connect.  She enjoys creating and performing in multi-disciplinary and immersive work that fosters an experience of growth, reflection, and wonder.   REHAN ANSARI is a writer/playwright based in Brooklyn.  His play Unburdened was recently presented at the Meet Factory in Prague.
