Zizania Mania, or, When Bad Things Happen in Good Soil
Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
Today’s Readings: Genesis 28:10-22 & Matthew 13:24-30
“Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” Genesis 28:16
Things are a mess. The world’s in a mess. The country’s a mess. And truth to tell, I’m a bit of a mess right now as well.
The Gospel reading this week is the Parable of the Weeds and the Wheat. One of my faves. Very briefly, a farmer sows wheat in a field, but when it comes up, there are weeds all over the place, along with the wheat. What a mess. The servants want to fix it, but the farmer says, leave it alone. We’ll sort things out later.
Things are a mess. What I’m starting to realize, though, is that God is present in the mess. Whether I know it or not. Not to fix it. But to be with us in the mess. And that’s good enough for now. – K
