The mission of Ecclesia Ministries of New York is to form and support communities of faith in public places throughout New York, with an emphasis on creating communities made largely of people who live on the streets and who have little access to other resources. Each 'church' worships out-of-doors in public space; spaces which already attract street people and serve as common ground for meeting and social discourse. These churches offer the same mutual support, pastoral care and worship as traditional communities of faith, but with an emphasis on needs and issues common to the marginalized of our society.
The Madison Square Park congregation of Ecclesia Ministries meets every Sunday for worship in Madison Square Park and, for the past eleven years, St. Paul & St. Andrew has supported this “congregation without walls” by providing Brown Bag lunches on the first Sunday of the month. Our ministers have often preached there. You can assist in three ways:
- Help make sandwiches and pack the Brown Bag lunches at 9:45 am in the Social Hall on the first Sunday of the month.
- Deliver the 25 Brown Bag lunches to Madison Square Park by 2pm. (You’re always welcome to stay for the service, which includes hymn-singing and Holy Communion.)
- Support the ministry with a financial contribution.
