Summer in the City
One of the best things about summertime in the city is that we have a bit more time and energy to do fun things. We hope that you’ll spend some of both with us! It’ll be great to enjoy the city and each other over July and August. Mark your calendars and save these dates….
Sunday Worship at 10am
To beat the heat and shift our pace a bit to allow for more midday freedom, our services will begin one hour earlier. 11am worship will resume on Sunday, September 11.
Wednesday, July 13th at 5:30pm: Supper & (Hymn) Sing
It’s time for one of our favorite summer events…the hymn sing! Our beloved Minister of Music, Frank Glass, will lead our time and we’ll get to pick our favorite tunes to sing. So limber up your voices and join us. We’ll have a light supper first and then raise our voices to praise God and shout with joy. We’ll be outside in the beautiful courtyard.
Sunday, July 17th at 11am: Church-Wide Cookout
Following worship service, we’ll gather in the courtyard for a good ol’ cookout. We’ll have our gorgeous and inviting space ready to fill with music and fun and YOU! What’s on the grill? Well, burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, watermelon, and anything else K wants to cook up. You don’t want to miss it.
Sunday, July 24th: Christmas in July
Our time of worship and fellowship afterwards will be dedicated to celebrating Christmas…just in July! That’s right, we’ll sing Christmas carols, be surrounded by holiday decorations, and find joy in the ongoing truth that God is with us. After service, we’ll have a fellowship time that stays on theme, hosted by the United Women of Faith. There will be a holiday cookie exchange, too, so get out your flour and butter, folks. Plus, all are invited to take home a memento from the home collection of our saints, Jeanne Voltz and Ressie Mae Bass. They both left some items to us and we’d love for you to have a piece to remember them by.
Tuesday, August 2nd at 5:30pm: Picnic in the Park
What’s summer without a picnic in the park? All are invited to pack up a brown bag and join us in the Arthur Ross Pinetum in Central Park (86th St. Traverse). There are a smattering of picnic tables, but you can also bring your bag chairs and/or blankets to spread out in the shaded area. There is a bunch of playground equipment right there, but we’ll also have an assortment of lawn games to enjoy. Crochet anyone?
Sunday, August 14th at 10am: Outdoor Worship in Riverside Park
We’ll take our witness out into the world! We’ll gather for a casual worship in Riverside Park at 89th Street, just north of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. It’s shaded and lovely, with steps and a bench, is easily accessible, plus it’s right by Hippo Playground. So we can certainly take advantage of that after worship.
Tuesday, August 30th at 5:30pm: Walk With Me
Join us on a leisurely stroll across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. You can meet us at the church at 5pm or meet us at 5:30pm at the Park Place subway station (2 and 3 trains). Then we’ll enjoy the 1.1 mile walk across the East River, taking in the beautiful views. Once across, perhaps we’ll get a cone from the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory while we wander through the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Kids & Families Ministry
Sunday School goes on hiatus for the summer while our kids and families travel and camp and enjoy a little more freedom in their schedules. On Sundays during worship, Kids 6 and under can join our childcare provider, Al-Naima Finch, for playtime in the Parlor or in the Courtyard, depending on the weather.
We will have Playground Church on July 31st, which is Harry Potter’s birthday. That means, of course, we’ll be doing magic—so you don’t miss it!
Plus, this year, we’ll have Weekend Vacation Bible School on August 26-28. Amanda Munroe will be our Camp Director this year. We can’t wait to gather with the kids for singing, storytelling, games, cookouts, and learning more about the love of God and the joy we find in community. Let Amanda know your kids are coming!
