End Hate Doors by V.L. Cox
June 23 | 8:00 am - 8:00 pm
Public Art Exhibition on the West End Ave steps to the church
As the world celebrates Pride Month this June, renowned lesbian artist V.L. Cox brings her most well known work, the ‘End Hate’ doors, for its first exhibition in New York City in its finalized conception. Originally conceived in 2015 in response to Arkansas’s discriminatory legislation targeting LGBTQIA+ individuals (the Religious Freedom Restoration Act), eight colorful doors, historical symbols of segregation, serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for justice and embodying the resilience and defiance of marginalized communities.
The interactive mixed media work will be on display June 21-23 on the West End Ave steps to the sanctuary. The installation at the church follows the historic vote in early May at the United Methodist Church’s General Conference to remove 52 years of discriminatory language against the queer community in the denomination’s Book of Discipline, including marriage and ordination bans.
On Sunday, June 23 at 12:15pm, Cox will discuss the ‘End Hate’ installation with St. Paul & St. Andrew church member, Karen Erren, in a 90 minute artist talkback in the church’s sanctuary. Reservations are not required.
