“In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar…” Luke 3:1
On this blessed Second Sunday of Advent, we look to the coming of — John the Baptist??
Certainly! John the Baptist is the central character of Advent, the star, so to speak. And boy, is his a story to be told. Like the tale of the birth of Jesus, the coming of John the Baptist is a story set in history, set against the backdrop of an oppressive and threatening political context.
John the Baptist is the herald who foretells the coming of Christ, sure. But he is so much more than that. He becomes a teacher, a mentor, a spiritual guide, to Jesus. For us, he can be a way-maker to help us ‘make a way for God’ in the wilderness and turbulence of our lives.
