“And, having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.” Matthew 2:12
Happy almost Epiphany!
Epiphany, marking the day when the Wise Ones arrive in Bethlehem to see the infant Jesus, has the larger meaning of ‘shining forth’ or ‘becoming clear’.
In Matthew’s telling, the events of that first Epiphany are dream-driven. A dream warns the Wise Ones about Herod’s cruelty. Joseph’s dream tells him to flee the country with his family and seek asylum in Egypt.
My prayer this Epiphany is that we can find ways to keep alive a dream of compassion, love and justice, in the face of dangerous times. May our task for these times ‘become clear’ to each of us.
See you then,
